Hardbodies
Back in the 60’s, the Beach movie was a popular genre in the fluff-type of film that was prevalent then, but Frankie and Annette were not the ideal types that looked good in bathing suits (Linda Evans was, though). In the mid-90’s, we finally had hunks and babes, but by then, drive-ins were out and these films could only be seen on VHS tape or DVD and a lot of them were awful. In the early to mid 80’s we had some knockouts in the female department, but the guys were wiry and geeky. However, with Hardbodies, that all changed, because the lead (Grant Cramer)was a handsome man with charisma, and it ushered equality for both sexes.Cramer plays Scotty, a typical L.A. drifter with no job, but probably gets by somehow. He has a steady girlfriend named Kristi (the lovely Teal Roberts) but lives in a dumpy apartment that he’s way past due on rent. He also has a goofy looking friend named Rags (Courtney Gains) who hangs out with them. The story involves three middle-aged dudes who come to L.A. to have “philosophical discussions” with the babes of L.A., but they don’t know how to approach them. They spot Scotty using his techniques (dialoguing and BBD) on various women and they soon ask him for his help. He refuses their offer of room and board at their swank beach house, but after getting evicted and sleeping under the boardwalk, he agrees to teach them his techniques.Of course, what prevails afterwards are the typical: beach parties that last until dawn, music, the usual double-crosses, and the eventual plot resolution. Still, it’s great fun. The acting is O.K., some are fine, others are gawd-awful. The music is cool (Vixen is in it). The ambiance is fun and the dialogue is fresh. Worth renting on VHS; I doubt it’s on DVD, but avoid the sequel; it’s a bore.

It’s been done before, and done before better. A year ago The Girl Next Door had most of the same concepts, themes and lessons. Studious boy meets wild girl, boy breaks the rules for the first time, girl straitens her life for the first time, they fall in love, and then what? However, the amateur writer (McCormack) should have remembered to add a climax, or even a third act. It was one of those clips that just seemed to be, “Is this the conclusion?” Debuting in his first American film, said UK actor Julian Moris, gave a realistic, well done performance. Whirly Girl Monet Mazur is beautiful; unfortunately, less could be said about her acting. Profanity and nudity may be an issue for ratings, there is mild nudity during the sex scenes and what kind of language would you expect from 18-year-old boys?Nothing bad could be said about the image or audio quality. Then again, nothing new in the world of aesthetics was brought to the photo either, nor should have been. It’s a typical ‘on location’ pic. The musical score is mostly combined with a mix of pop and rock hits, appropriate for the scenes but soon to be outdated.Don’t get the wrong impression I did enjoy the pic. It was as good as average for its genre and worth seeing once. It repeats some cut and paste storyline; however, Whirly Girl is cute, funny, and entertaining in its own. The scenes at the boarding school with the horny teenage boys are hilarious and very tangible for any young adult male. This pic serves the appetite of its young adult (17-25) target audience.

I really liked this movie. This is not a B movie, although the title is rather hokey. I like the original title better, but on the other hand it might not have piqued my interest if it hadn’t had “werewolf” in the title! It is a horror story and a love story. The acting is above average and the cinematography is absolutely beautiful. The story is somewhat based on a true story about a man tried and imprisoned for 15 murders in 19th century Spain. His defense was that he was in fact, a werewolf and had no control over himself once he transformed. The murders are quite gruesome. The few scenes of animal abuse disturbed me more, but that’s just me.
