Spread is an unusual little mpeg. I say ‘little’, as it’s essentially a low budget character-driven drama that is some how being commercially packaged as a rom-com. A quick glance at the credits reveals that this isn’t your average Kutcher vehicle: it’s directed by Scotland’s David Mackenzie of “Young Adam” and “Hallam Foe” fame.Make no mistake, the Kutcher we see at the start of the clip is very familiar: arrogant, uptight and utterly beautiful. But as the run-time flies past, we somehow warm to his character even though he’s getting more sex than most of us will get in a lifetime. And here’s the good news: Kutcher’s performance is fairly astounding. He manages to reveal the humanity in his deeply flawed character with notable subtlety and a distinct lack of clich. Kutcher’s (many) sexual relationships portrayed in the clip are brutally realistic: the modern and perhaps unromantic realities of casual sex are not dressed-up in any cheap Hollywood moralising. This is also evident in the overall tone of the flick: there are many moments that could have descended into schmaltz, but a sharp edge it maintained on just about every line of dialogue.Kutcher fans: beware. This is a real departure for the actor, but thank goodness: it’s a movie with all the superficial gloss of Hollywood and all the invention of an indie flick.

Weeds: Season 4

I haven’t been a dedicated fan of a TV sets since Moonlighting back in the 80’s but I’m totally hooked on Weeds. Mary-Louise Parker plays the role of Nancy Botwin perfectly! As a widowed housewife trying to maintain an upper class lifestyle for herself and her two sons by selling weed, she obviously encounters problems maintaining her two roles….mother and drug dealer. Parker really emphasizes this “dual role” and she does it brilliantly….you’ll find yourself really feeling for the character and cheering for her all the way. Elizabeth Perkins in the role of Celia, Nancy’s close friend, is phenomenal. Watch her carefully in this show, her brilliant acting and her characters dry sarcastic nature provides much of the shows’ comedic value but it is sometimes very subtle. I personally think Perkins deserves a supporting Emmy for this one. In short, Jenji Kohan has scored big-time with Weeds and I hope it enjoys a good long run on Showtime….I’m definitely a dedicated fan! My only suggestion….episodes should be an hour long!

Midnight Witness

to me this movie was watchable,but not great.there was some excitement and suspense,but not as much as i had hoped for.the acting is pretty good.the characters were okay,although i thought Jan Michael Vincent’s character was very strange and out of place in this movie.the movie didn’t always hold my interest and my mind sometimes wandered.the basic plot of the movie is that a man videotapes some crooked police beating another man.the police notice they are being taped.from there,the man and his wife go on the run to escape the crooked cops who want the videotape.as far as this genre of movies goes,this movie is average.if you have nothing better to do,you could do worse.but,like i said there were times when my mind wandered,due to some slow spots.this is certainly not the worst movie of the genre i have ever seen,but not the best either.many people may really enjoy this movie.it just depends on your taste.for me,i give “Midnight Witness” 5/10.

Downloading Nancy

The plot is simple but still extraordinary: There is a couple. One day the wife leaves her husband in favor of a lover, she met online, and demands to be freed from life. The lover makes the husband explain himself.Beside the three main characters there is a female psychologist, giving the audience just a glimpse at her judgment on the wife. Instead, a great deal of care was taken over the development and the directing of the three different personality profiles, to justify the main character’s behaviors. And well, thanks to convincing performances, for me it worked quite perfect!The imagery and the score of the movie is excellent, very subtle and keeping the audience away from too much awfulness, still not hiding anything.However, it clearly feels like an artificial story, even it might be inspired by some various true events. Life usually is not as simple as this. But hey, that’s why we watch mpegs, isn’t it? ;)I voted with 10, because such a story could not get any better realization. It’s perfect.
