Choke
I generally like the books from author Chuck Palahniuk,although I comprehend the reason why he has many detractors.His books frequently border on the absurd and they are full of bizarre and antipathetic characters with ambiguous intentions and inexistent morality.However,in my particular case,the vitality of the narrative and the force from the ideas are enough for making his work fascinating,at the same time it presents strange concepts with a simultaneously laconic and poetic style.If what I have just mentioned on the previous paragraph seems confusing is because Palahniuk’s work is very difficult to describe.So,how difficult would it be to take his work to the enormous screen? I suppose that the precedent established by the excellent film Fight Club has set a very high standard which will be difficult to surpass on any other film based on a Palahniuk’s book.Choke is extremely far away from reaching the levels of Fight Club,but it still feels as a mediocre film which could not capture the sardonic sense of humor and fascinating characters’ psychology from the book.The main problem at adapting a literary work to the cinema is that even if the main story is respected,the author’s “voice” which made the book memorable will be missed.And it is exactly there where the vision of the director must get in,in order to achieving that identity or at least replace it with something interesting or unique.The previously mentioned Fight Club is a perfect example of that; but Clark Gregg is far from being David Fincher,and his weak direction cannot transmit any of the identity from the book.He only generates the minimum level of energy in order to keeping the story moderately interesting.If it was not for Sam Rockwell’s excellent performance,we would only have a collection of extravagant scenes and cynic dialogs which are not connected by the solid narrative flow Gregg should have achieved.Fortunately,Rockwell is absolutely credible and natural on his role,and his performance truly elevated the quality from the movie.Choke worked much better on the literary medium thanks to its structure,vivid descriptions and eloquent narrative.The film is an insipid and generic adaptation of the book.However,I did not dislike it,and I think it deserves a slight recommendation,because it did not bore me and,mainly,because of Rockwell’s performance.

Blood for Dracula
I don’t recommend this video for anyone under the age of 30 (they won’t get it). Made on a very limited budget, this mpeg was not produced for the masses but rather for film students and those who appreciate an alternative to the predictable, horror-movie-garbage that hollywood tends to produce year after year. Basically, this is an art film from the 70’s… so one should enjoy it as such. Oh yeah, the nudity is not that bad either.
