All God’s Children Can Dance

In 2004, veteran Japanese director Jun Ichikawa took one of the best short stories in Murakami’s collection, Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman, and crafted a masterpiece of a film, perfectly capturing the themes of loneliness and isolation, with a great score, acting and cinematography. I strongly recommend it to everyone.How woeful it is then that newbie American director Robert Logevall, has taken, in my opinion, the worst story in Murakami’s collection, after the quake, and turned it into a dull, aimless film that manages to be both vacuous and pretentious. We follow Kengo (Jason Lew), a mixed race man, who has been told all his life that he is the Son of God by his vaguely disturbed mother (Joan Chen), as he negotiates his relationship with his girlfriend (Sonja Kinski) and boss (Tzi Ma). Kengo has lost his faith in God and his belief in his implied divinity. One day he sees a man he believes is his father. He follows him.It’s Jason Lew’s first role, so his falterings as a lead are understandable, but I found him irritating and smug as his character, and uncomfortable to watch. Sonja Kinski is decent in her first role, but really it’s Chen and Ma that give the only good performances in this film. The former with wonderful emotion, and the latter with remarkable subtlety and understatement. Both keep afloat a film that fails to explore any interesting themes it brings up (Oedipal complexes, religion), nor manages to deliver any interesting scenes whatsoever. The narration that aims high for philosophy but spews out drivel doesn’t help, neither does the over ambiguous ending that fails to capture the existentialism of the story and just seems stupid.It’s not all bad. There’s some nice cinematography, Chen and Ma’s performances are genuinely wonderful, and the soundtrack by STS9, is lovely. But this is an unremarkable film, with little to recommend, even to Murakami fans. Watch Tony Takitani instead, and hold your breath for the eventual Norwegian Wood adaptation.

Saving Grace: Season 3

I’m far from being a prude, but sometimes I’m still amazed at what cable can get away with (I still remember when Playtex had to show their bras on manikins).At first, I was reluctant to watch Saving Grace because the commercials portrayed Grace as a lost, angry rebel who finds redemption. But on a friend’s recommendation, I gave it a shot and was really impressed. This titillating show offers a little of everything. Grace is tough and indulgent, and makes no apologies for it. I find her to be one of the most real character on TV.Moving forward, I hope Grace isn’t somehow ’saved’ and thereby transformed the fact that she’s struggling between her demons and her faith is what makes her character identifiable, and the show a true pleasure to watch.

Threesome

I think what makes this flick work is the chemistry between the three main characters. You like these characters, feel with them and believe that they would get along in real life like they do in the movie. The concept is clearly quite controversial, and I guess that’s why it’s so unpopular. I like the way it isn’t really all resolved in the end… there is always a tiny degree of imperfection. The plot at times appears to have been written with the primary intention of being controversial rather than entirely realistic, emotionally or otherwise. I’m not sure if that’s true, or it just seems that way. The pacing is pretty good. You’re rarely bored. The clever dialog and script keeps your interest as well as consistently making you laugh. The video somehow makes you care about these characters, despite their many shortcomings and flaws. Maybe it’s because they’re human… we can identify with them, more than usually with American films(that are often shallow). The direction is pretty good. The mpeg pretty much belongs in the ‘good, but not entirely sure why’ category. You like what you see, but you can’t pin-point exactly why. All in all, a pretty good romance-comedy that should be seen by anyone open-minded enough to enjoy it. I recommend this to anyone who isn’t offended by the topic(and not easily offended in general) but particularly to those who are fans of one or more of the main actors.

Spooks

Spooks[1 clip] Richard Armitage Just finished the last episode of series three, and was reminded why this is my favourite show of all time. I think the comparisons to 24 are quite unfair–they both deal with terrorism, but the similarities end there. Spooks is far more cerebral, and spends more effort on character and plot development.Unlike other reviewers, I felt series three was every bit as good (and in many ways even better) than the previous two. The departure of several main characters was handled exceedingly well, and while they’ll be missed, I think their replacements are quite strong and as such, the transition has been quite shaven. Kudos! (Er, no pun intended)

The Education of Charlie Banks

I got to see this at a screening last week in LA. And I must say, this is a very thought-provoking, creative effort from first-time director Fred Durst. Set in the backdrop of the mid-70s, this is a well-written coming-of-age tale by a gifted young cast. Jesse Eisenberg, of the new film Adventureland, brings a sense of wonderment and naivety to his role. Jason Ritter also shines as a questionable friend from the past, who may or may not have a more questionable past. Fred Durst directs the film as a nostalgic throwback to a forgotten era. The script is top-notch and as noted, the acting is superb. Definitely a must see. Especially for the curious, who have dismissed Mr. Durst as lead singer of the rap/metal band Limp Bizkit. Mr. Durst shows he has the chops to pull off a rather remarkable film.
